What is TENS?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. What this means is that by placing the electrode pads on the skin next to the site of pain, gentle electrical impulses are sent from the machine through the skin into the body where they stimulate nerve fibres.
How Does TENS work?
There are two ways in which TENS combats pain, firstly it blocks the painful nerve impulses from getting to the brain - this is known as the Pain Gate Mechanism - and secondly it encourages the release of endorphins which are the body's natural pain killer.
If used correctly TENS uses the body's natural pain relief system to combat pain and the need for drugs to combat the pain should be reduced or eliminated completely.
Are There Any Dangers Or Side Effects?
There are no recognised side effects to TENS either immediate or in the long term. Any adverse effects are generally found to be an allergy to the electrode pads, adhesive (either the tape or self adhesive pads) or electrode gel. In light of this several different varieties of electrodes have been developed.
Never use a TENS machine if you have a demand type pacemaker.
Never use a TENS machine when operating machinery or when driving.
Never use a TENS machine in the early stage of pregnancy without consulting your GP.
Never place TENS machine electrodes at the front of the neck in the region of the carotid artery.
IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS ABOUT USING TENS, CONSULT YOUR GP OR PHYSIOTHERAPIST.
